Is the iPhone cheaper in Dubai? UAE prices against the rest of the world

Dubai has a reputation as a cheap place to buy iPhones. We check that against Apple's official UAE prices, VAT, tourist refunds and 11 other countries.

Cheaper than most countries, but not the cheapest: Apple’s UAE store sells the iPhone 18 Pro for AED 5,099, about $1,388, which makes the UAE the 5th-cheapest of 12 storefronts we track. That is 16% above the US price, but the US figure excludes sales tax while the UAE price already includes 5% VAT. A tourist who reclaims that VAT brings the effective price down to roughly $1,322. Prices are from Apple’s own stores, retrieved 2026-10-13.

Dubai’s position changes from model to model. Its best showing is the iPhone 18 Pro Max (4th of 12) and its weakest the iPhone 17e (7th of 12).

Dubai got more expensive this autumn

Comparing Apple’s UAE prices today with our 2026-07-03 snapshot, every model on sale at both dates now costs more: the iPhone Air rose from AED 4,299 to AED 4,699, the iPhone 17 rose from AED 3,399 to AED 3,799, the iPhone 16 rose from AED 2,999 to AED 3,399 and the iPhone 17e rose from AED 2,599 to AED 2,999. Because the dirham is fixed to the dollar, these are genuine price changes by Apple rather than currency effects, and a dollar-earning visitor feels them in full. New models launched at prices above the ones they replaced as well: the 18 Pro costs AED 5,099 against AED 4,699 for the 17 Pro. The full picture across all 12 countries is in our 2026 iPhone price increase guide.

Where Dubai’s reputation comes from

Three things work in the UAE’s favour. First, VAT is only 5%, against 15% in Saudi Arabia and roughly 20% across much of Europe, so less tax is baked into the shelf price. Second, the dirham is pegged to the US dollar: our snapshots show it unchanged at 3.6725 AED per dollar between 2026-07-03 and today, so a dirham price does not drift in dollar terms the way a yen or euro price can. Third, Dubai is a regional shopping hub where tourists can reclaim VAT on the way out. On the 18 Pro, that leaves the UAE more expensive than the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan but cheaper than Thailand, Australia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Germany and India.

What the tourist VAT refund is really worth

Visitors can reclaim UAE VAT through the country’s electronic tax-free system, which is run at departure points such as the airports. You shop at a participating retailer, show your passport so the purchase is tagged, and validate it as you leave. The refund is 5% of the price less a processing fee, so the real saving is a little smaller than the table suggests. On the 18 Pro it is worth at most about $66.

Is that enough to beat the US? On sticker prices, the refunded UAE price undercuts the US list price for none of the 7 current models. The comparison flatters the US, though, because an American buyer pays state sales tax on top. Our US after-tax breakdown shows how quickly that closes the gap.

Dubai or Riyadh?

For Gulf residents the obvious alternative is Saudi Arabia. Apple’s UAE store is cheaper than its Saudi store for all 7 current models in dollar terms; on the 18 Pro the gap is about $131. Strip out each country’s VAT and Saudi Arabia’s underlying price is lower than the UAE’s for 6 of 7 models. So the UAE's edge comes from its lighter tax rather than from Apple charging less before tax. Compare the UAE and Saudi Arabia on fuel, food and subscriptions too.

Who should buy in Dubai?

If you live in one of the countries that rank below the UAE for the 18 Pro, such as the United Kingdom, Germany or India, a Dubai stopover can save real money, especially with the VAT refund. Bear in mind that you may owe import duty or VAT when you bring a new phone home, and that warranty service can be limited to the country of purchase. Indian travellers in particular should read why the iPhone costs so much in India. If you are flexible on destination, Hong Kong and Japan are the other usual candidates.

iPhone prices in Dubai: common questions

How much is the iPhone 18 Pro in Dubai?

AED 5,099 on Apple's UAE store, about $1,388, including 5% VAT (retrieved 2026-10-13). Tourists who reclaim the VAT pay roughly $1,322 before the refund operator's fee.

Is the iPhone cheaper in Dubai than in the USA?

On sticker price, no: the 18 Pro is 16% more in the UAE. But US prices exclude sales tax, so the gap narrows once state tax is added at a US checkout.

Is the iPhone cheaper in Dubai or Saudi Arabia?

In the UAE for all 7 current models. Much of the difference is VAT: 5% in the UAE against 15% in Saudi Arabia.

Can tourists get the VAT back on an iPhone in Dubai?

Yes, at participating retailers. The UAE refunds VAT to eligible tourists through its electronic tax-free system when they leave the country, minus a processing fee, so the saving is a little under 5%.
