Why Hong Kong is one of the cheapest places in the world to buy an iPhone
No sales tax, a dollar-pegged currency and a fiercely competitive market. How Hong Kong iPhone prices compare, model by model.
Hong Kong sells the iPhone 18 Pro for HK$10,499, about $1,338, and that is the full price: there is no sales tax to add. Among the 10 Apple storefronts we track whose prices include tax, Hong Kong is the cheapest for 5 of 7 current models. Only the US and Canada list lower sticker prices, and both of those exclude sales tax. Figures come from Apple’s own stores, retrieved 2026-10-13.
Three reasons Hong Kong is cheap
No consumption tax. Hong Kong charges no VAT, GST or sales tax on goods. Most countries in our data build 5% to 20% of tax into the shelf price, so Hong Kong starts with a structural advantage before Apple sets a single number.
A currency tied to the dollar. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar within a narrow band of 7.75 to 7.85. Our snapshots show 7.848 HKD per US dollar today against 7.843 on 2026-07-03, so Apple’s Hong Kong prices barely drift in dollar terms. A price set at launch keeps almost exactly the same dollar value all year, unlike a yen or rupee price.
A competitive, visitor-heavy market. Hong Kong is a regional shopping destination with dense electronics retail and a large flow of visitors from the mainland and the wider region, which keeps pressure on prices.
Hong Kong against its Asian neighbours
Hong Kong is cheapest of these four Asian storefronts for 5 of 7 current models at list prices. All figures are in US dollars at today’s rates and include each country’s tax; the lowest in each row is in bold.
| Model | Hong Kong | Japan | Singapore | Thailand |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | $2,230 | $2,301 | $2,420 | $2,377 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,465 | $1,513 | $1,639 | $1,574 |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,338 | $1,386 | $1,483 | $1,455 |
| iPhone Air | $1,210 | $1,197 | $1,366 | $1,306 |
| iPhone 17 | $994 | $1,008 | $1,131 | $1,038 |

Where Hong Kong is not the cheapest tax-inclusive store worldwide, the winner is Japan (iPhone Air and iPhone 16). The margins are small, so a modest currency move can flip the order.
Hong Kong vs buying in the US
On sticker prices the US wins: Hong Kong is cheaper than Apple’s US list for none of the 7 current models, with the 18 Pro 12% dearer in Hong Kong. American shoppers do pay sales tax at the till, which narrows the gap. Even so, at California’s 7.25% statewide rate, the highest state-level base rate, the US is still cheaper for every current model. For the 18 Pro, a US buyer would need to pay sales tax above 12% before Hong Kong came out ahead. Hong Kong is the bargain for people who would otherwise pay VAT-inclusive prices, not for Americans. Our US after-tax guide works through the state rates.
Is Hong Kong still the bargain it was?
In our 2026-07-03 snapshot, Hong Kong was the cheapest tax-inclusive storefront for none of the 4 models that are on sale both then and now. Today it leads on 2 of those same models. It has gained ground: in dollar terms, prices rose faster in at least one rival store than in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong dollars, those carried-over models are up 14% on average since 2026-07-03, and the 18 Pro launched 12% above the 17 Pro. Among this year’s new models, the 18 Pro ranks first among tax-inclusive stores, and the iPhone Duo ranks first.
Before you buy in Hong Kong
- Check the SIM setup. US-model iPhones have been eSIM-only for several generations, while models sold elsewhere have generally kept a physical SIM tray. Some recent models are eSIM-only everywhere, so read the spec sheet for the exact model.
- Warranty. Apple’s terms allow it to limit some service to the country of purchase. Check what cover applies where you live.
- Duty at home. No tax in Hong Kong does not mean no tax on arrival. If your country’s customs allowance is below the price of the phone, you may owe import VAT or duty.
- Buy from Apple or an authorised reseller. Hong Kong’s busy grey market can undercut list prices, but provenance and warranty become your problem.
