iPhone price in India vs the USA: why the gap is so big
The same iPhone costs far more in India than in America, and takes months of income instead of days. The duties, taxes and pricing behind it.
The iPhone 18 Pro costs ₹164,900 in India, about $1,719, against $1,199 in the USA before sales tax. That makes it 43% more expensive in India. The gap in effort is far larger: at average incomes the phone takes about 7.5 months to earn in India and 4.9 days in the US. Prices are from Apple’s Indian and US stores, retrieved 2026-10-13.

The gap is not uniform. It is narrowest on the iPhone 17 (16%) and widest on the iPhone Duo (56%). The models fall into two clear groups: the iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo carry premiums of 42% to 56%, while the iPhone 17, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17e sit at just 16% to 19%. If you are buying in India, the second group is priced much closer to the US. Individual pages: iPhone 18 Pro in India and in the USA.
Where the gap comes from
Tax is counted differently. Apple India’s prices include 18% GST, the rate that applies to mobile phones. Apple’s US prices exclude sales tax altogether. Strip the GST out of the Indian price and the 18 Pro works out at about $1,457, still 22% above the US list price. Add California’s 7.25% sales tax to the US side and the like-for-like gap narrows to about 13%, but it does not close.
Customs duty. India levies import duty on smartphones and many of their components, which raises the cost of any model that is imported whole or assembled from imported parts. Apple now assembles many iPhones in India, which reduces some of that cost, but local assembly has not brought Indian prices down to US levels.
Apple’s own price-setting. Apple chooses a rupee price for each model and rounds it to a local price point. Those prices move with Apple’s decisions rather than daily with the exchange rate. This year the 18 Pro launched 22% above the 17 Pro in rupees, the 2nd-largest generation-on-generation increase of the 12 countries we track; see the 2026 price increase analysis.
The income gap is bigger than the price gap
Average income per person in the US is roughly 32 times India’s on the World Bank’s measure. Combine that with a higher price and an iPhone is a far heavier purchase in India. The iPhone 17, the model with the smallest price gap, still takes about 4.5 months of average Indian income, against 3.7 days in the US. Gross national income per person is an average that includes high earners, so for a typical salaried worker the real burden is heavier still. Our affordability index ranks every country this way.
Should you buy in the US and bring it home?
At today’s exchange rate, buying an 18 Pro in the US and paying California’s 7.25% sales tax would save about ₹41,571 compared with the Indian price; in a state with no sales tax the saving is about ₹49,908. Before you count on it:
- Customs on arrival. India’s duty-free baggage allowance for returning travellers is far below the price of a Pro iPhone, and duty is charged on the excess. Declare it; the duty can absorb much of the saving.
- eSIM only. US-model iPhones have no physical SIM tray. India’s major carriers support eSIM, but check that your plan does.
- Warranty. Apple’s terms allow some service to be restricted to the country of purchase, so confirm what an Indian service centre will do for a US-bought phone.
Closer to home: Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok
Many Indian travellers pass through the Gulf or Southeast Asia rather than the US. Converted to rupees, the 18 Pro costs:
- United Arab Emirates: AED 5,099, about ₹133,160, or roughly ₹126,819 after a tourist tax refund (₹38,081 less than in India, before refund fees and customs).
- Thailand: THB 48,900, about ₹139,503, or roughly ₹130,377 after a tourist tax refund (₹34,523 less than in India, before refund fees and customs).
- Singapore: SGD 1,899, about ₹142,200, or roughly ₹130,459 after a tourist tax refund (₹34,441 less than in India, before refund fees and customs).
