iPhone 18 Pro Max price in the USA: what you really pay after sales tax

Apple's US prices exclude tax, which makes them look cheaper than everywhere else. Here's the real out-the-door cost and how it compares abroad.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs $1,299 in the USA before sales tax, the price on Apple’s US store as of 2026-10-13. What you actually pay depends on where you buy it: from $1,299 in states with no statewide sales tax, such as Oregon, Delaware, Montana and New Hampshire, to about $1,393 at California’s 7.25% statewide rate, and more again where cities and counties add their own tax.

What the 18 Pro Max costs, state by state

The table applies each state’s statewide base rate to the $1,299 list price. These are floors: most states let counties and cities levy additional sales tax, so the rate at your nearest Apple Store or delivery address may be higher.

StateStatewide rateTaxTotal
California7.25%$94.18$1,393.18
Texas6.25%$81.19$1,380.19
Florida6%$77.94$1,376.94

OregonNone$0$1,299.00
DelawareNone$0$1,299.00
MontanaNone$0$1,299.00
New HampshireNone$0$1,299.00

The spread between the cheapest and dearest state in this list is $94 on a single phone. Among the taxed states shown, California adds $94, Texas adds $81, Florida adds $78 and New York adds $52. Even at the California figure, the phone represents about 5.7 days of average US income (World Bank GNI per capita), the lightest burden of any country we track for this model.

Local taxes: the part most comparisons miss

The statewide rate is only the start. Counties, cities and special districts in most states add their own sales tax, and in big metro areas the combined rate is often well above the state figure. For illustration, here is what the 18 Pro Max would cost at a few combined rates:

  • At 8% combined: $1,402.92, or $104 in tax.
  • At 9% combined: $1,415.91, or $117 in tax.
  • At 10% combined: $1,428.90, or $130 in tax.

Even at 10%, the US price stays below the cheapest tax-inclusive storefront abroad, Hong Kong, at $1,465. (Our Hong Kong guide explains why it is so cheap.)

To find your exact rate, check your state revenue department’s lookup tool or simply look at the tax line in Apple’s checkout before you pay; it is calculated for your delivery address or the store you pick up from. Ordering for delivery to a lower-tax address only helps if you genuinely live or receive goods there: sales tax follows the delivery destination, and many states expect residents to pay use tax on items bought elsewhere for use at home.

Why the US sticker price looks so low

American sales tax is set by states and localities rather than nationally, so Apple shows one national price and adds the right tax at checkout. Nearly everywhere else, the law or retail convention requires prices to include VAT or GST, and that tax is often 10% to 20%. Comparing a US sticker price with a British or German one therefore compares a pre-tax number with a post-tax one. Canada works the same way as the US: Apple Canada’s CA$1,899 is before GST or HST, so its apparent $1,330 needs tax added too.

After tax, how does the US compare abroad?

The table puts the California out-the-door price of about $1,393 next to Apple’s tax-inclusive prices in other countries, converted at today’s exchange rates.

Even after the highest statewide tax in our list, the US undercuts every tax-inclusive storefront we track. The nearest is Hong Kong at $1,465; a US buyer would have to pay sales tax of about 13% before it came out cheaper. At the other end, the 18 Pro Max costs about $483 more in India than an after-tax California purchase. Buying in the US as a visitor

Overseas visitors pay the same sales tax as residents, because the US has no national tourist tax refund scheme. Two more things are worth checking before you buy. US-model iPhones have been eSIM-only for several generations, so make sure your home carrier supports eSIM. And whatever you save may be partly taxed back when you land: most countries charge import VAT or duty once you exceed your personal allowance. Indian buyers in particular should read iPhone price in India vs the USA, which works through that maths.
