The cheapest Netflix country in 2026 (and why the VPN trick fails)
Netflix plans ranked by country in US dollars and as a share of income, plus why signing up through a cheaper country rarely works.
The cheapest Netflix country among the 11 we track is India, where the Mobile plan costs ₹149 a month, about $1.55. For the top Premium plan, the cheapest is India at ₹649 ($6.77), while the most expensive is the United Kingdom at $27.74; the US charges $26.99. Measured against local income, though, the ranking flips, and using a VPN to sign up somewhere cheaper is more trouble than it is worth.
Netflix Premium, ranked from cheapest to dearest
Premium is the one plan offered in every country we track, so it is the fairest like-for-like comparison: the same 4K tier with the most simultaneous streams. Prices are from Netflix’s help pages, retrieved 2026-10-13, converted at that day’s exchange rate; the income share uses World Bank GNI per capita.
| Country | Premium, local | USD | vs US price | Share of monthly income |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🇮🇳 India | ₹649 | $6.77 | 25% | 2.9% |
| 🇹🇭 Thailand | THB 419 | $12.46 | 46% | 1.9% |
| 🇯🇵 Japan | ¥2,290 | $14.44 | 54% | 0.5% |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | CA$23.99 | $16.81 | 62% | 0.4% |
| 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia | SAR 71 | $18.93 | 70% | 0.6% |
| 🇦🇪 United Arab Emirates | AED 71 | $19.33 | 72% | 0.4% |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | A$28.99 | $20.18 | 75% | 0.4% |
| 🇸🇬 Singapore | SGD 29.98 | $23.41 | 87% | 0.3% |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | €21.99 | $24.57 | 91% | 0.5% |
| 🇺🇸 United States | $26.99 | $26.99 | 100% | 0.4% |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | £20.99 | $27.74 | 103% | 0.6% |
The spread is wide: Premium in the United Kingdom costs 4.1 times what it does in India. We do not track Netflix in Hong Kong. The live version of this table, with every plan, is on our Netflix price page.
The middle Standard plan, which most households actually choose, follows a similar order. It is cheapest in India at $5.20 and dearest in the United States at $19.99. In the United Kingdom the jump from Standard to Premium is the largest in our data, $9.25 a month, so it is worth checking whether you really need 4K and extra screens.
The cheapest way in, country by country
Plan line-ups differ by country, which changes what “cheapest” means. Mobile-only plans exist in India and Thailand; a Basic plan in the United Arab Emirates, India, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Thailand; an ad-supported Standard plan in Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States. The lowest-priced plan in each country:
| Country | Cheapest plan | Local | USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇮🇳 India | Mobile | ₹149 | $1.55 |
| 🇹🇭 Thailand | Mobile | THB 99 | $2.94 |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | Standard with ads | CA$7.99 | $5.60 |
| 🇯🇵 Japan | Standard with ads | ¥890 | $5.61 |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | Standard with ads | A$9.99 | $6.95 |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | Standard with ads | €6.99 | $7.81 |
| 🇺🇸 United States | Standard with ads | $8.99 | $8.99 |
| 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia | Basic | SAR 35 | $9.33 |
| 🇦🇪 United Arab Emirates | Basic | AED 35 | $9.53 |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | Standard with ads | £7.99 | $10.56 |
| 🇸🇬 Singapore | Basic | SGD 15.98 | $12.48 |
The cheapest entry ticket costs $1.55 in India; the dearest is $12.48 in Singapore. These entry plans are not equivalent: a mobile plan is limited to a phone or tablet, Basic drops to lower resolution, and the ad tier shows commercials. Prices move, too; our Netflix price increase tracker shows which countries went up recently.
Cheap in dollars is not cheap for subscribers
Netflix sets lower prices where incomes are lower, but not in proportion. As a share of one month’s average income, Premium is lightest in Singapore (0.3%) and heaviest in India (2.9%). So the country with the lowest dollar price is still a bigger monthly commitment for a local subscriber: Premium takes 2.9% of average monthly income in India, against 0.4% in the United States. That gap is the whole reason the “cheap country” prices exist. Our affordability index ranks subscriptions and other products this way, and where streaming is cheapest runs the same comparison for Spotify.
Why the VPN trick rarely works
On paper, an American paying for Premium through India would save $20.22 a month. In practice several things get in the way, and they stack:
- Payment has to match the country. Netflix generally expects a card or payment method issued in the country the account belongs to, and local gift cards are typically meant for use only in the country where they were sold.
- Location is checked continuously, not just at sign-up. Netflix detects many VPN and proxy services and blocks or limits streaming when it spots one. An account that is always used from another country stands out.
- The terms say no. Netflix’s terms of use let members watch primarily in the country where the account was set up, and the catalogue changes with location anyway, so a foreign account may not even carry the shows you want.
- Household rules tie the account to a home. Netflix’s account-sharing rules link an account to a primary household, which makes a home in one country and a billing address in another harder to sustain.
The realistic outcome is a blocked stream or a closed account, and no route to a refund. The legitimate ways to pay less are dull but reliable: drop to an ad-supported or lower tier where one exists, check whether your mobile or broadband provider bundles Netflix, and cancel between the series you actually want to watch. For music, the same logic applies to the cheapest Spotify country.
One honest exception: if you genuinely move abroad, your subscription should move with you. Netflix prices follow the country the account is billed in, so after relocating you update your payment details and pay the local price there, whether that is more or less than before. Spotify works the same way, and its Premium Individual plan is cheapest in India ($1.45 a month) and dearest in the United Kingdom ($17.17) among the countries we track.
