Apple’s foldable iPhone is sold as the iPhone Duo, and it starts at $1,999 in the United States before sales tax. Among the countries whose Apple prices already include tax, the cheapest is Hong Kong at HK$17,499 (about $2,230) and the most expensive is India at ₹299,900 (about $3,127). Prices are the base-storage starting prices on Apple’s own stores in 12 countries, retrieved 2026-10-13.
iPhone Fold or iPhone Duo?
Before launch, Apple’s foldable was widely referred to as the “iPhone Fold”, and that is still how many people search for it. On Apple’s store the product is named iPhone Duo, which is the name we use in our data. Whatever you call it, it sits at the very top of the range: it has the highest starting price of any iPhone in all 12 stores we track. In the US, the money for one Duo would buy two iPhone 17e handsets, Apple’s cheapest current phone at $699, with $601 to spare. For the rest of this year’s lineup, see what every 2026 iPhone costs.

The price of folding: Duo vs Pro Max
The most useful comparison for a would-be buyer is not the Duo against other countries but the Duo against the best non-folding iPhone in the same shop. Measured in local currency, the foldable costs 44% more than the 18 Pro Max in Germany (€2,299 against €1,599) and 67% more in India (₹299,900 against ₹179,900). India is therefore doubly expensive: it charges the most for the Duo outright and asks the biggest premium over the Pro Max. If the foldable screen is a nice-to-have rather than the point, the 18 Pro Max is the obvious place to save.
A foldable measured in working days
Dollar prices understate how differently the Duo lands from one country to the next. At average income, it costs about 8.2 days of earnings in the United States but 13.6 months in India. Even the 18 Pro takes about 7.5 months there, so the folding model adds 6.1 months on top. The calculation divides the price by World Bank gross national income per person, so it is an average rather than a typical take-home wage; the method is explained in days of income explained.
If you are travelling: the three obvious places to buy
Visitors can sometimes pay less than the shelf price. Here is how the cheapest tax-inclusive storefronts look once the visitor tax relief that applies there is taken off:
- Hong Kong: HK$17,499, about $2,230 (no sales tax to reclaim; the shelf price is the price).
- Japan: ¥364,800, about $2,301, or roughly $2,092 with the tax removed (10% consumption tax, waived for eligible visitors).
- United Arab Emirates: AED 8,499, about $2,314, or roughly $2,204 with the tax removed (5% VAT, refundable to tourists at departure minus a processing fee).
Even with tax relief, none of them undercuts the US sticker price of $1,999, although adding US sales tax narrows the gap. Compare against what you would pay at home, including your own sales tax or VAT. Our guides to buying in Hong Kong and Japan explain the practical steps.
Buying a foldable abroad: be more careful than usual
The gap between storefronts is real: buying in Hong Kong instead of India saves about $897 at today’s exchange rates. But a first-generation foldable is the phone where an overseas purchase carries the most risk. Folding displays and hinges are more complex to repair than a conventional slab phone, so it matters where you can get service. Apple’s warranty terms let it limit some service to the country of purchase, and AppleCare plans are sold and administered country by country. If you buy abroad, check what cover you will have at home before you pay, and count any import duty or VAT you owe when you return.
