How much does it cost to charge an electric car? Every country compared
Home charging costs per full charge and per 100 km in 130+ countries, and how that compares to filling up with petrol.
Charging an electric car at home costs about $9.00 for a full 60 kWh battery in the median country we track, or $2.55 per 100 km. The cheapest full charge is in Ethiopia at $0.36, the most expensive in Bermuda at $27.84. In 132 of 133 countries where we also have petrol prices, home charging is cheaper per kilometre than filling up, typically by about 77%. Figures use household electricity prices for 134 countries from GlobalPetrolPrices, retrieved 2026-10-13.
How we calculated it
- Battery: 60 kWh, charged from empty to full, typical of a mid-size EV. That is about 353 km of driving.
- Consumption: 17 kWh per 100 km for the EV and 7 litres per 100 km for a comparable petrol car.
- Electricity: each country’s average household price per kWh, including taxes, as if you charge at home on a standard tariff.
- Petrol: each country’s average pump price for regular unleaded.
- Not included: charging losses (some energy is lost as heat, so the meter reads a little more than the battery stores), cheaper overnight or EV tariffs, home charger installation, and public charging.
These are deliberate simplifications. If you have a time-of-use tariff, your real cost per charge could be well below these figures; if you rely on public chargers, it will be higher.
The biggest car markets, in local money
For drivers in the largest car markets we cover, here is a full charge in local currency and what 12,000 km a year costs in electricity versus petrol:
- 🇺🇸 United States: $11.40 per full charge; $388 a year to run on electricity vs $1,032 on petrol
- 🇨🇳 China: CN¥30.58 per full charge; $155 a year to run on electricity vs $1,158 on petrol
- 🇩🇪 Germany: €21.97 per full charge; $834 a year to run on electricity vs $2,021 on petrol
- 🇬🇧 United Kingdom: £18.39 per full charge; $826 a year to run on electricity vs $1,950 on petrol
- 🇯🇵 Japan: ¥2,159 per full charge; $463 a year to run on electricity vs $904 on petrol
- 🇮🇳 India: ₹437 per full charge; $155 a year to run on electricity vs $947 on petrol
- 🇨🇦 Canada: CA$10.53 per full charge; $251 a year to run on electricity vs $1,216 on petrol
- 🇦🇺 Australia: A$22.32 per full charge; $528 a year to run on electricity vs $1,343 on petrol
- 🇳🇴 Norway: NOK 97.07 per full charge; $345 a year to run on electricity vs $2,619 on petrol
- 🇰🇷 South Korea: ₩10,083 per full charge; $257 a year to run on electricity vs $1,186 on petrol
- 🇧🇷 Brazil: R$49.70 per full charge; $339 a year to run on electricity vs $1,060 on petrol
- 🇦🇪 United Arab Emirates: AED 17.63 per full charge; $163 a year to run on electricity vs $979 on petrol
Where an EV saves the most, and the least
The saving depends on the ratio between power and fuel prices, not on either one alone. It is largest where electricity is cheap and petrol is taxed or priced at market rates: Ethiopia (99%), Kyrgyzstan (97%), Bhutan (97%), Zambia (96%), Myanmar (96%). In those places home charging costs 4% or less of what petrol does per kilometre.
The saving is smallest where petrol is subsidised or power is expensive: Venezuela (379% dearer), the Cayman Islands (39% cheaper), Guatemala (43% cheaper), Japan (49% cheaper), Gabon (51% cheaper). In one country (Venezuela) petrol is so cheap that charging at home actually costs more per kilometre than filling up. Running costs are only part of the picture, of course: the purchase price, insurance and maintenance matter too, and are not covered here.
Public and fast charging cost more
Everything above assumes home charging. Public chargers, and especially DC rapid chargers on motorways, usually charge considerably more per kWh than a household tariff, because the operator has to pay for expensive hardware, grid connections and demand charges, and wants a profit. Some networks bill per minute rather than per kWh, add session or idle fees, or offer cheaper rates through a subscription. A driver who relies entirely on rapid charging can find the running-cost advantage over petrol much smaller, and in some countries it disappears. If you cannot charge at home or at work, check local public charging prices before assuming the savings shown here.

EV charging costs: quick answers
How much does it cost to fully charge an electric car?
At home, a 60 kWh battery costs about $9.00 to charge from empty in the median country we track, ranging from $0.36 in Ethiopia to $27.84 in Bermuda at household electricity rates (GlobalPetrolPrices, retrieved 2026-10-13).
How much does it cost to charge an electric car in the US?
About $11.40 for a full 60 kWh charge at the average US household rate of $0.190 per kWh, or $3.23 per 100 km, against $8.60 for a petrol car using 7 L/100 km.
Is charging an electric car cheaper than buying petrol?
At home, almost everywhere. In 132 of the 133 countries where we have both prices, home charging costs less per kilometre than petrol; the median saving is 77%. Public fast charging narrows or can erase that gap.
How far does a full charge go?
At 17 kWh per 100 km, a 60 kWh battery gives roughly 353 km. Real range is lower in cold weather and at motorway speeds.
